Exploring Rome in May: A Guide to Savouring the Eternal City
So I went to Rome for a girls weekend and my birthday. It was really fun! But it rained all the time, which is not what you want when visiting Italy. Thankfully, the rain finally stopped on our second day and it was beautiful. Nice weather for dining al Fresco!
Our hotel, Casa dei Coronari, was only a few steps away from the Piazza Navona with its major landmarks. On the first, we booked a guided tour of the Vatican. I had never seen such long queues in my life! The guided tour of Vatican City lasted three hours, but it was nice to have someone guide us and tell all their secret stories about what happened behind closed doors at this amazing location.
The next day, we crossed the river Tiber and headed to one of Rome’s oldest neighbourhoods: The Trastevere where old-style restaurants, laundry lines come to life on every corner and joyous conversations in Italian spill into open doorways. It is here that you can truly feel what it means to be Roman – no other place could do justice like this area so close to the heart of all that makes Rome great.
I remember the first time I laid eyes on Rome. It was like Paris, but not quite—there’s something about it that feels just a bit more alive than its French counterpart, in my opinion. There are so many beautiful places to explore and see here! My favourite is discovering some of the small streets with independent shops you can’t find anywhere else in Europe or even elsewhere.
